A yeast infection can occur in several forms, the most common being of the vagina, but it is not limited to that area or that gender. Other places that are moist and warm can be a place for a yeast infection to occur, the mouth, under breasts, in folds of skin and yes the penis. Men can also get a yeast infection though it is less common. Three quarters of people by the end of the life will have had to have dealt with a yeast infection at least once in their lives!
A yeast infection is caused by a fungus, most commonly a candida fungus, candida albicans, though there are cases of other pathogenic candida species causing yeast infections. Each person’s symptoms can vary too, and the treatment that best suits them is not always the same as another, as the cause is not always the same.
Causes too can change and range from soaps and products you use on your skin, antibiotics or steroids you may be taking, a diet to high in sugar, wearing clothing that makes you too sweaty, even living in a humid climate.
Itching, burning, discomfort or even pain during sex, a white and thick discharge, a yeasty odor or no unusual smell, swelling, redness, discomfort are all common yeast infection symptoms. These are also symptoms of other infections though so be sure to confirm diagnosis with a doctor. Also make sure you use a condom or steer clear of sex until treatment is completed, as though it doesn’t happen often, a yeast infection while not an STD can be passed between partners during sex.
Treatment could be from your doctor, over the counter or natural. Natural is increasingly popular because it is effective, affordable and free of side effects. Plus there is no problem of your yeast infection developing a resistance to treatment as can happen with medicated options. As well as treating yeast infection take time to identify and deal with the root cause too.
